|
Last week I was lucky enough
to catch up with Hugh Morrus aka WCW star General Rection.
From the indie circuit, to being Goldberg's first victim,
right up to his US title victory. . . this is what the
General had to say!
MIKE: No need for an introduction, but for the
benefit of those who have lived under a rock and never
heard of Hugh Morrus, tell our readers who you are.
RECTION: Well, for those of you who don't know
me, I'm General Rection of the Misfits in Action! We have
been assigned the distinct honor to bring WCW back to
what it once was. We have been labeled as the
upholders of right and wrong but in our own "special way."
MIKE: Can you tell us a bit about your background.
Is wrestling something that you wanted to do pretty much
all of your life?
RECTION: As far as me deciding to become a wrestler,
that was not a plan of mine. I walked into a Gym in Brooklyn,
New York, and that's where I met the man who would craft
me into what I am - Rodz! My dad was the one who actually
brought me to meet Johnny - I really had no interest or
knowledge of the sport, except for my High School and
College background.
MIKE: Who are some of your favorite wrestlers past
and present?
RECTION: There are a
lot of wrestlers today who impress me. The Jung dragons,
Hardyz, Dudley Boyz, any hardcore tough guy! The Radicalz,
Chris Jericho,Triple H, Scott Steiner, Booker T, and of
course the Misfits! Some of my favorites from the past
are: Jimmy Snuka, Tony Atlas, the older Guerrero's and
many more.
MIKE: So going into 2001, what are you expectations
and goals?
RECTION: I am trying not to go into 2001 with "any"
expectations. I believe that things are going to happen
whether or not I wish for them. My goal is to bring the
MIA and myself up another notch or two.
MIKE: You've been with WCW for quite some time
now. In 1996 as the Eric Bischoff era began, for example,
the signings of Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Did you ever
believe you would reach the near main event status you've
achieved today as all these new guys were pushed straight
into top spots?
RECTION: I'm not sure I will ever reach the status
that the men you mention have reached. I do believe that
given the opportunities I could give it a hell of a chance.
Paying your "dues" only means something to the boys who
have actually done it. That doesn't mean driving from
Atlanta to Macon. I think the days of paying your dues
is over-not a good thing!
MIKE: One final question, you've spent many years
and hundreds of days whilst on the road in WCW. Any amusing
anecdotes or fun memories that particularly stick out
for you?
RECTION: I have a ton a great stories about my
life on the road and several of people have approached
me about writing a book. But that's not for me - at least
not yet. I will say I have a lot of wonderful memories
of men who are still with me and some of men who are not.
For now I will keep them to memory - but perhaps in the
not so distant future I will share them.
MIKE: Any closing comments for our readers?
RECTION: In closing let me say this. I started
out in this business knowing very little and have grown
both as a man and a wrestler. Now in the day of sports
entertainment I have even more. This is not
how my mom and dad saw their son growing up and supporting
his family. It takes a special breed of man to do what
each of us does and we do it for various reasons. Mine
is because there are the fans that stayed with me from
the days of "sweet William" to the present day "General
Rection" and to those people - I love you! To all you
great fans of WCW and the Misfits - hang in there. . .
it's going to be a great year!
MIKE: Thanks for speaking to us today.
RECTION: Thank you Mike. It was an honor any time.
