SmashWrestling Interview

Interview with ECW's Nova!
by Mike Aldren
of EWN & SmashWrestling.com 11/00

Our EWN editor Mike Aldren brings you yet another great interview, read what ECW's Nova had to say to him, the superstar talks about his career and his thoughts on the wrestling scene

I recently had the opportunity to interview Nova, one of ECW's top superstars. Nova is a proud example of a member of the ECW locker room paying its dues and is widely respected throughout the company. Here is what he had to say...

MIKE ALDREN: Nova, you've worked in ECW for quite a long time now. How would you compare working with Paul Heyman compared to other promoters?

NOVA: Like working for a mad scientist. There is a method to his madness. You can tell by watching him at the TV tapings, that his heart and soul are truly in this, and he sleeps, eats, and breathes his product and company.

MIKE ALDREN: How did you find your way into ECW?

NOVA: Well I started going to a wrestling school ran by a guy called Mike Sharpes in Bricktown, New Jersey. In 1992 he gave me a break and a few years later in 1995 Raven (Scott Levy) saw me appear at an Indy show in Aberdeen NJ, he then invited me to come to ECW, to join his newly created flock.

MIKE ALDREN: If Scott Levy (Raven) rang you up tomorrow and said, "How about coming to work with me in the WWF" what would your reply be?

NOVA: I would have to see what they would want to do with me. I have a year and a half left on my contract with ECW, so I probably wont have to worry about that till then.

MIKE ALDREN
: Many of our readers are aspiring wrestlers... how would you suggest they go about entering the business and what dangers should they avoid?

NOVA: Go to a reputable school, and be prepared to work harder than you ever have before, if you are serious about trying to make it. There are 1000's of guys and gals out there trying to get to this level, and only a few ever make it. Have a backup plan just in case. Be respectful, and listen to everyone.

MIKE ALDREN: This is one we like ask many people... wrestling, especially on the Internet has really taken off in the last few years. How would you say the Internet has affected the way the business has evolved?

NOVA: It has helped and hurt it. Information is now more readily accessible than ever, and guys can really get themselves out there, and a website is almost a must. It has hurt it too, as they are way too many arm-chair wrestlers out there who criticize what we do and hide behind a keyboard giving their thoughts and comments when they sometimes aren't warranted.

MIKE ALDREN: What can we expect from ECW in the next few months... has Paul Heyman found the company a new television network since parting with TNN?

NOVA: He is working feverishly at it right now as we speak. Myself along with pretty much everyone else in the company, has alot of faith in Paul and I think he will make the best deal for the company, with whatever network suits us best.

MIKE ALDREN: If you had the chance to work a match with anyone... who would it be with?

NOVA: Jerry Lynn, because he is as good as everyone thinks he is. Or maybe Shawn Michaels, if he came back for one more match, as I truly do believe he is the best ring wrestler of all time

MIKE ALDREN: In your opinion, who are the Top 5 wrestlers in the world today?

NOVA: That's a tough question but I'm going for...

Triple H (WWF) - He is the best out there today, can have a good, if not great match with just about anyone.

Jerry Lynn (ECW) - Probably the most under-utilized guy ever. He is going to be a great world champion.

Mitsihiru Misawa (ECW) - Has had some of the best matches in the world in the past decade.

Chris Benoit (WWF) - Maybe the best all-around wrestler ever. The guy is awesome.

Booker T (WCW) - A great representative for the business. A total class act in the ring and out of it.

MIKE ALDREN: What will Nova be doing after wrestling?

NOVA: I would love to be on the creative end someday. I truly enjoy every aspect of this industry, and think I have a pretty good mind for it. Aside from that, I would like to own and operate my own restaurant chain.

MIKE ALDREN: Well thanks for taking time out to talk to us today. I look forward to seeing you with a world title around your waist very soon.

NOVA: I hope so. Thanks man!
